Strengthen adaptive solutions and resilience

We train farmers to change or diversify their crop mix and management practices or adjust their planting or harvesting dates in response to changes in expected yields of some yields in certain crops. However, infrastructure logistics, knowledge, access to finance, markets and other factors present barriers to large-scale adjustments. Wider availability of readily usable climate data, as well as new analytics, could help us priotize agricultural investments such as for irrigation, processing plants, or new crops that are better suited to the changing conditions. We train farmers to adopt climate-smart crop varieties that are resistant to drought, cassava being one of them. There is abundance of local knowledge, with locally available solutions in some parts involving multi stakeholder perspectives which are becoming increasingly important to define optimal strategies for each locale. We encourage as well farmers to plant permanent crops such as fruits and nut trees and other perennials that fix nitrogen and other nutrients in the soil and do not require additional synthetic inputs.

We train farmers to practice sustainable intensification

As climate change impacts make current agricultural systems less profitable, or even untenable in certain areas, its likely that farmers will begin to seek out new Farmland. We are helping farming communities stay within its existing footprint by promoting sustainable intensification practices that boost production on the same amount of land. The most common practices we encourage farmers to use include no-or minimum-tillage, inter-or double-cropping, cover crops and optimising feeding. Intensification boosts yields, which increases farm incomes, giving the farmers the cash needed to finance improvements that support climate-resilience.

Foster Food Security

We have already started seeing signs of climate change having negative effects on agricultural yields. Farm Uganda through the Lead Firm Structure approach tried to offset this scenario by fertilisation. We are ensuring that yields continue to increase under a changing climate and that especially refugee communities have access to nutritious diets that Promote healthy populations.

Increased resource efficiency

We encourage this and we practice it at Farm Uganda Fresh cassava root value addition centre by reducing on water and energy inputs, waste management of cassava peels (transforming them into high quality livestock feeds), run-off and soil erosion.
